CANAAN — The Town of Canaan Climate Smart Task Force will be holding an outdoor event on composting and rainwater collection 3-5 p.m. May 8 at the Tendai Buddhist Institute, Canaan.

More than 25% of a typical household’s waste is composed of yard trimmings and food scraps. Backyard composting provides an easy, inexpensive way to reduce organic materials in the waste stream:

Keep materials out of landfills; Improve soil quality; Reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In partnership with the Town of Bethlehem, community members can order and prepay for collapsible compost bins, ranging in price from $54.95 for the basic kit to $99.95 for a kit with bin, aerator, rodent screen, and collection pail. Bins are made from 50% postconsumer plastic waste. Rain barrels are 55-gallon capacity with overflow hose nozzles, spigots, and fine mesh lids to protect against debris and mosquitos. Rain barrels cost $69.50.

After ordering and prepaying, email or call Canaan CSC Task Force member W. Dwyer with contact information to ensure that the order will be ready for pick up in East Chatham on May 8 at 518-526-5594 or missmisc@icloud.com.
